Dancing at The Studio, Ockley

New Pupils

Dancetime is delighted to welcome our new pupils and their families to The Studio in Ockley.

Pupils enjoy dancing to popular rhythms and rhymes in a friendly environment. They explore a variety of music and some dances include dressing up or using props. Basic steps in Ballroom and Latin American are also taught.

Mums are able to wait in the small studio with younger siblings and chat over a coffee during the Skippers and Wigglers classes which take place in the large studio.

Dancing with dogs

Dance Competitions for Dogs

Alison and her border collie Badger joined Dancetime in October 2013. They had been entering various competitions through Paws and Music Association and wanted to improve their musicality and style.

Alison worked hard at perfecting her routine and in November the pair came 1st in 'Musical Dressage' and 6th in the 'Heel Work to Music' competitions. This gave them Distinction at level 2.

In the dance routine both handler and dog are judged for accuracy, content and interpretation. Different footwork patterns are required within the routine. Synchronised movements for both handler and dog are required in addition to the dog's elements and the choreography must utilise the available space to the best advantage.

In December Alison and Badger's hard work was rewarded by coming first once more in 'Heel Work to Music'. Winning this competition  has moved them up to the next class.

This dynamic twosome should be competing next in March.

Adult Disco and Line Dance

Groovers

Congratulations to our Groovers who performed so well at our recent display.

The Groovers class combines fitness and fun. We first warm up using muscles not used in our day to day life. Stretching and raising our heart rate then we dance a few disco/freestyle routines to our favourite ‘Oldies’ and new music. Line dance follows with routines to a variety of rhythms; Latin, popular music and country and western. Gone are the days of hands on hips, hats and jeans. Some of the footwork is very challenging and the dances vary from a slow waltz to fast disco.

Dancing is recommended for overall fitness and health. It certainly keeps the grey matter working as the learning of new routines and dancing in time requires a lot of concentration.

Groovers is a friendly class and small enough to see the steps being taught and to be given individual help as required. Routines are taught slowly and clearly with old favourites constantly brought back.

Why not join us?

Dancetime Annual Display

Dancetime Display 25.01.14

On Saturday 25th January pupils of Dancetime took part in our annual Dance Display. We are so proud of everyone who performed. They all worked so hard to polish each dance and looked fantastic.

As usual the display featured a range of styles including Ballroom and Latin American, Freestyle, Contemporary, Line Dance and fun dances incorporating costumes for the younger dancers. Our Wigglers performed 'Ma Baker' dressed as bandits in scarves whilst our Springers and Groovers dressed as cowboys for a line dance and our Twirlers impersonated sailors for their 'Sailor' dance. Pupils adapted quickly and efficiently to these props which really helped to add character to their performances.

There was also a cheer dance which the Springers and Steppers performed beautifully. Poms and a football were incorporated making the dance enjoyable to watch bringing colour and cheer into the hall.

A special mention goes to our youngest soloist at four years old, Evie Blackburn, who danced 'Get Lucky'. Evie has only been with us for 5 months and has already improved so much, learning tricky steps and gaining enough confidence to stand up in front of everyone alone. We are so proud of her!

The afternoon also displayed some of pupil's own choreography. The Steppers made up a team dance 'Ready Or Not' showing off their skills and allowing them a chance to experiment with different moves. We encourage this a lot in class as it develops personal style and requires working together to try out new steps. The team dance was received very well and we were impressed with how much their standard of dance has advanced since last year.

Thank you to everyone who came to watch our dancers and support them. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.

Groovers' Social

Groovers’ Social

On Friday 7th June the gang travelled from Effingham and its surrounds to the Dancetime studio in Ockley to enjoy an evening of Line Dance and frivolity.

We all chose a few of our favourite dances and before we knew it we had been dancing for 1.5 hours! It was then time to change our shoes and head for the local pub!

Here are a few of the dances we enjoyed:

Crazy little thing, Tracks 2 10 SE, Pretend, Leave right now, Spanish Lullaby, This and That, A cowboy and a dancer

...... I could go on!

We had hardly scratched the surface of our repertoire. I think this occasion will have to become a regular feature!

Slippery floor!

Dancing Danger!

We arrived in Effingham on Thursday eager as ever for our classes, only to find the floor was
a hazard.

For some unknown reason the usual maintenance had left the surface extremely slippery.

Unperturbed we sought out alternative locations and tailored our dances to suit.

The Groovers danced in the corridor.

Wigglers and Jigglers danced non-jumpy, non-skippy dances in the hall.

The Twirlers and Springers danced on the grass.

We choreographed a team freestyle dance with strictly no live jumping, spinning or kicking.

We progressed in our Dancetime awards, learning and practising new steps.

Today the floor is back to normal thanks to the speedy work of  Lorna, the KGV Manager, and her staff.                Dance classes will run in full glory on Thursday 13th June.

Thank you everyone for being so understanding and such good sports!

Trial Classes

Trial Classes

On 22nd and 23rd May Dancetime opened its doors to welcome interested children and parents to try out various classes free.

Mums were given the opportunity to see exactly what we get up to in our lessons and to read about Dancetime.

Wednesday in Ockley ran very successful Skippers and Wigglers classes.

The children thoroughly enjoyed dressing up for some of the dances and entertaining their mums.

Thursday in Effingham had participants for the Wigglers, Jigglers and Twirlers classes.

There were many smiles of delight as everyone joined in.

It was a pleasure to meet so many newcomers. We hope to see you all again.

Medal Test

Medal Test

On Saturday 18th May 2013 pupils from Dancetime arrived at North Holmwood Village Hall to take their dance tests.

Pupils from 3 years to adult ably showed the examiner from the IDTA, Miss Lesley Dodd, the routines they had been learning and perfecting over the past few months.

Everybody looked very smart and performed beautifully. Even the sun shone for us!

Our friendly examiner put the candidates at ease and any nerves were quickly dissipated.

The session ran very smoothly and finished on time thanks to our very capable assistants.

All genres taught by Dancetime were examined; Ballroom, Latin American, Freestyle, Street and Line Dance.

Our next Medal Test will be held on Saturday 30th November 2013 and our classes are already working towards it!

Skippers

A dance class with a difference.

This class for 2-3 year olds helps prepare children for school. It is designed to introduce them to the disciplines of listening and responding, whilst encouraging their independence and improving their confidence.

Learning at Skippers includes simple counting, differing between right and left and following instructions.

Pupils' coordination and rhythm is improved as they dress up and dance to nursery rhymes and simple freestyle rhythms.

Movements are taught and reinforced each week.

Wednesday 3.30 to 4.00pm
